What is Birth Related Trauma?
Birth trauma can be described as “The emergence of a baby from its mother in a way that involves events or care which cause deep distress or psychological disturbance, which may or may not involve physical injury, but resulting in psychological distress of an enduring nature.” (Greenfield et al., 2016, p. 23). That is, even when there are no physical injuries or harm to the infant or mother, women may experience severe emotional distress after a traumatic birth.
Importantly, birth related trauma encompasses a range of experiences associated with birth, including infant loss, postnatal care and breastfeeding. Birth related trauma can also affect non-birthing parents and those working in the birth space.
A Global Conversation
For many women, childbirth is envisioned as a moment of celebration and initiation into motherhood. However, for those who grapple with birth trauma, this transformative experience can morph into a source of enduring distress. Awareness about the issue of birth trauma has increased so much recently that it has triggered inquiries in Australia’s NSW Parliament and in the UK Parliament, sparking a global conversation about the issue.
